FRUITS
Mandarins are bursting with vitamin C and full of sweet, juicy flavour — perfect for snacking, lunchboxes, or adding to salads. Great value this week at $4–$8 a kilo, with plenty of tasty varieties to choose from, including Afourer, Imperial, Daisy, Dandy Mandy, Premier, Murcott and Tangelos. A delicious and healthy way to brighten up your day!
Hass avocados are at their best in winter, and great value right now at just $1–$3 each, depending on size. Look for multi buy specials for extra savings. Creamy and full of flavour, they’re perfect smashed on toast, sliced into tacos, or added to easy fish tortillas. Pop a few in your trolley this week — they’re a tasty way to brighten up your meals!
Luscious Queensland strawberries are bursting with sweet, sunny flavour. Enjoy them fresh from the punnet, or bake them into crumbles, muffins, pies, or puddings. Have your tried roasting strawberries? With strawberries season hotting up its time to enjoy these classic berries and get creative in the kitchen! Strawberries are $5 to $8 for 250g punnet.
In July in Australia, you’ll find a wonderful selection of new-season apples that are crisp, sweet, and at their best. main varieties in season now at your local greengrocer are Royal Gala, Granny Smith, Envy, Yello, Ambrosia, Pink Lady, Fuji, Jazz, Kanzi and Bravo. Depending on size and grade apples are $4 - $16 a kilo. This Apple & golden syrup pudding – made with Granny Smith apples is delicious.
Quinces need to be cooked before eating and can turn brown quickly once peeled — so pop them straight into lemony water to keep their colour fresh. Then bake or poach until the flesh is tender and beautifully pink. Quinces are in season for just a few more weeks, so grab some now and enjoy their unique, fragrant flavour while they last. They’re priced at $6–$8 a kilo.
Oranges are in abundance right now, with delicious navel oranges available for $4–$8 a kilo,and depending on size. Buying a 3-kilo bag is a good saving. Perfect for eating fresh or juicing. Don’t forget to save the peel — grate some zest to add a burst of citrus flavour to cookies and cakes.
Green kiwi fruits are in season and retailing at $8–$15 a kilo, depending on size, while gold kiwifruit, with its extra sweetness, is $10–$16 a kilo. Packed with vitamin C and fibre, kiwifruit is perfect for boosting immunity through winter. Look for value punnets for extra savings. Add slices to your morning yoghurt or porridge for a fresh, tangy lift — or simply scoop and enjoy as a snack!
Blueberry prices are easing and growers are predicting a great season. This week blueberries are $5-$7.50 a punnet. Prices are expected to ease further as we head towards the peak supply period of October to March.
VEGETABLES
Carrots are a fantastic buy this week at just $2–$3 a kilo. Sweet, nutritious, and so versatile, they’re perfect for making a warming carrot chilli and ginger soup or Mexican carrot, jalapeno & black bean. A simple way to bring colour and flavour to your winter meals!
Elongated and crisp, Chinese cabbage also called ‘Wombok’—has mild, pale green to white leaves. Finely shredded, it’s a great addition to minestrone and other winter vegetable soups. Chop and toss it into stir-fries for extra crunch and flavour. For a simple, tasty dinner, stir-fry chicken with garlic, ginger, and green onions, then add Chinese cabbage and snow peas. Finish with a splash of oyster sauce and serve with steamed rice. Wombok is $3.50-$5 a head this week.
Large, plump leeks offer a gentle, sweet onion flavour that enhances many dishes. Finely chop them into soups, burger mixes, or Bolognese sauce, or braise with thyme until tender for a tasty side. Large leeks are $2.50–$3 each.
Fennels, firm, crisp bulbs with a delicate aniseed flavour, are a winter favourite. They are delicious enjoyed raw or cooked. Shredded fennel adds a delightful crunch to winter salads. If cooking, enjoy fennel cut into wedges, braised or baked, and served with lamb shanks or a leg of lamb. This easy grape tomato, prawn, chilli & fennel linguine is a tasty mid-week meal. Large fennel bulbs are a bargain at $2-$2.50 each.
Brussels sprouts are at their best when small, compact, and even in size — these are sweeter and more tender. Halve, quarter, or slice them for fast, even cooking, and be sure not to overcook to keep their flavour fresh and texture just right. This week, Brussels sprouts are $10–$13 a kilo, with the smaller sizes offering the best buy.
Celeriac is a winter superstar—flavourful, versatile, and perfect for warming meals. Chop it into soups, casseroles, or roasts, or team it with potatoes for a creamy mash. Grate raw celeriac into a crunchy winter slaw or a classic French remoulade to serve with corned beef, fish, or crab cakes. For something extra comforting, try a creamy celeriac, leek & smoked fish chowder. Fresh and delicious celeriac is available for $8–$10 a head.
Grab a handful of delicious roast chestnuts this season—they’re perfect for adding rich, nutty flavour to soups, casseroles, sauces, and puddings. Pair them with pumpkin, mushrooms, or cauliflower for a comforting, tasty soup that’s full of goodness. Chestnuts are available now for $10–$13 a kilo, depending on size and quality.
