FRUITS

Fruit

Apple season is in full swing, with fresh-picked Royal Gala, Fuji, Red Delicious, Sassy, Mi and Missile now available at your local greengrocer. Keep apples in the crisper section of your fridge for maximum crunch. Prices range from $3-$8 per kilo. For a fun snack, try slicing apples thinly and pairing them with almond butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants and bursting with flavour. In season now, they're a great buy at $2-$6 each, depending on size. Sprinkle the arils over yoghurt, add them to a fruit salad, or mix them into a refreshing pomegranate and mint spritzer.

Put healthy fibre rich pears on your shopping list. Williams pears are priced at $2-$4 per kilo, Corella pears at $4-$8 per kilo, Packham and Beurru Bosc pears at $4-$6 per kilo. Ripe pears are perfect for adding to a smoothie, while firmer ones add a crisp touch to salads or ideal for poaching. Roast pears with honey and walnuts for a simple yet elegant dessert.

Grapes are at their best, with a dozen or more different varieties to choose from, both seeded and seedless. Prices range from $4-$20 per kilo. For a unique option, try black sapphire grapes, known for their elongated shape and deep flavour. Add grapes to salads for a pop od sweetness.

Figs are a seasonal delicacy at just 50¢-$3 each. Their natural sweetness pairs beautifully with salty cheeses like feta, ricotta, and gorgonzola. Try them grilled with a drizzle of honey or served alongside prosciutto and almonds for a gourmet appetiser.

New-season Sheppard avocados are $2-$4 each. Unlike other avocados, they don't brown when cut, making them perfect for meal prepping. Mash them on toast with lemon zest or blend them into a creamy, dairy-free dressing for salads. Avocados are packed with goodness and super versatile.

Limes are at their juiciest and priced at $3-$7 per kilo or 50¢-$1 each. To extract more juice, roll them firmly on your countertop before cutting. Their tangy zest enhances everything from cocktails to marinades and guacamole.

Late season plums like October Sun, September Candy, Black Amber and Queen Garnet are a highlight of the stone fruit season, whether sweet or slightly tart, they're fantastic in salads, desserts, or simply enjoyed fresh. Roast plums with cinnamon for a delicious topping on yoghurt or porridge. Pick up a kilo or two this week for $4-$12 per kilo.

Boost your vitamin C intake with kiwiberries, also known as baby kiwifruit. Kiwiberries are $5-$6 per punnet, don't miss out the season is not a long one. These bite-sized, fuzz-free fruits are perfect for snacking or adding to fruit salads. Slice them in half and toss them into your morning smoothie for a natural sweetness boost.

VEGETABLES

Vegetables

Brown onions from South Australia and Tasmania are a top buy at $2-$4 per kilo. Caramelised onions add depth to burgers, pizzas, or add them to a tortilla with kumara. Store them in a cool, dry place for maximum shelf life.

Pumpkins are in good supply, with whole pumpkins selling for $1-$2 per kilo and cut pieces at $2-$3 per kilo. Roast chunks with rosemary and olive oil for a simple side dish or blend cooked pumpkin into a creamy soup.

Capsicums, both red and green, are a must-have at $3-$7 per kilo. Grill, stir-fry, or enjoy raw in salads. Rich in vitamins A, B3, and C, they add both colour and nutrition to meals. Try roasting capsicums and blending them into a smoky dip.

Carrots are a powerhouse of nutrients, with small bagged carrots priced at $1.50-$2 per kilo and larger loose carrots at $2-$2.50 per kilo. Roast with honey and cumin for a caramelised finish, or spiralise them for a healthy pasta alternative.

Victorian celery is a versatile and budget-friendly option at $3-$4 per bunch. Dice it for soups and stir-fries, or spread peanut butter on celery sticks for a classic snack. Don't discard the leaves—they add great flavour to homemade stocks and soups.

Locally grown Asian leafy greens like bok choy, choy sum, gai lum, and Kan Kong (water spinach) are great value for money, versatile and nutritious. Grab a few bunches for $1.50-$3.00 per bunch. Steam, sauté or stir-fry with garlic and oyster sauce for a quick and nutritious side dish.

Leafy kale is a great pick at $2-$3 per bunch. Blend it into a green smoothie, toss it into a stir-fry, or crisp it up in the oven for homemade kale chips. Enjoy sautéing kale with mushrooms, and serving with a soft-poached egg for a super healthy protein-rich breakfast.

Kumara (sweet potato) is a fantastic autumn vegetable at $2-$4 per kilo. Kumara fries or wedges with a sprinkle of sea salt and rosemary or served with an avocado dip make a delicious alternative to regular fries.

Both cauliflower and broccoli prices eased a bit this week, except to pay $4-$6 ahead for a cauli and $4-$6 a kilo for broccoli.
