FRUIT
Stonefruit is now in full swing, with fragrant peaches and nectarines flooding stores. Choose from a wide range of colours and sizes, with prices from $3–$10 per kilo, depending on variety and quality. Try this: char-grilled peaches with coconut sour cream & honey.
Apricots are at their seasonal best in December—plump, aromatic and naturally sweet with a pleasing tang. Enjoy sugar grilled apricots with raspberries or roasted apricots with passionfruit, honey and ricotta. Apricots are $6–$14 per kilo.
Cherries are the taste of an Australian festive season. With fruit arriving from Young, Orange, South Australia and Victoria, you’ll find a variety to suit your flavour preference and budget. Cherries range from $10–$40 per kilo, and 2-kilo boxes offer great value for entertaining or gifting at $20-$80. Whip up a batch of microwave cherry relish to enjoy with your festive meals.
Put some festive zing into your week with Aussie-grown limes and lemons. Supplies are increasing, and prices have eased, making them ideal for cocktails, salad dressings, seafood and marinades. Limes are $4-$15 a kilo, and lemons $6 -$10 a kilo.
Creamy bananas are plentiful with greengrocers offering stock for $3-$5 a kilo.
Treat yourself to the tropical sweetness of fresh juicy lychees, available at $20–$40 per kilo. Varieties with smaller seeds tend to cost a little more than those with larger seeds.
Rockmelons are eating superbly. Choose melons with golden to creamy skin, a sweet aroma, good weight for size, and slight softness at the stem end. Rockmelons are $3-$6 each, depending on size.
Nothing says summer like fragrant Aussie mangoes. Choose from Kensington Pride, Calypso, Honey Gold or R2E2. Mangoes are $2.50–$5 each. Serving suggestion: pair fresh mango with lime, mint and passionfruit for an easy festive dessert.
December is peak season for berries, with blueberries, raspberries and blackberries $3–$6 a punnet and Victorian strawberries $4-$6 a punnet.
Summer is prime time for tomatoes, with a colourful mix of shapes, sizes and flavours landing in store. Truss and oval Roma tomatoes are $5-$7 per kilo, heirloom tomatoes are $10-$15 per kilo, cherry and grape tomatoes are $2.50-$4 a punnet, and festive cherry truss are $4-$6 for a 500g punnet.
VEGETABLES
Potato prices traditionally rise at this time of year as demand peaks and supplies tighten. The best-value option is to buy in bulk, choosing 2–5 kilo bags. Plan ahead, unpack them from plastic as soon as you get home, and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated spot to help prevent greening or sprouting.
Carrots are excellent value and a nutritional powerhouse, offering vitamins A, B6 and C. Try them raw in salads, blended into juice with orange and ginger, or in a Moroccan carrot, rocket and chickpea salad. Carrots are $2–$3 per kilo.
Eggplant turns wonderfully smoky and tender on the barbecue, soaking up flavours like a sun-warmed sponge and earning its place as a true summer essential. With prices at $4–$8 per kilo, it’s the perfect time to pile a few into your basket and grill them into dips, salads, or charred slices for easy entertaining.
Sweet, colourful kumara is a flavourful alternative to pumpkin and delicious roasted for festive meals or added to salads. Kumara is $4–$7 per kilo.
A vibrant bunch of mint can lift a meal from every day to lively in a blink, delivering cooling freshness and bright flavour. Pair mint with cucumber, melons, lime, chilli, lamb, mango, pineapple, peas, potatoes and yoghurt. Add a bunch to your shopping list its $2.50-$3 a bunch.
Green beans are $4–$6 per kilo for machine-harvested and $10–$14 per kilo for premium hand-picked beans.
Tender, quick-cooking broccolini is perfect for summer meals—steam, grill, stir-fry or roast. Broccolini is $2.50–$3 per bunch.
Crisp and refreshing Cos lettuce is a summer essential for Caesar salads, wraps and sandwiches. Large Cos is $–$ per head or a two pack of baby cos are $-$.
Another option is the popular choice - crunchy and versatility Iceberg lettuce priced at $2.50–$3 each.
Vibrant red capsicums are the sweetest of the capsicums and packed with vitamins. Ideal for grilling, roasting, salads and pasta dishes. Prices are averaging around $12-$16 a kilo, as the season moves from Queensland to Victoria, supplies are a lighter.
FLOWERS

December brings an extraordinary selection of vibrant, festive blooms—perfect for Christmas decorating. Expect lush roses, billowing hydrangeas and stunning peonies in rich and pastel tones. Also in season are foxgloves, lisianthus, dahlias, smoke bush, kangaroo paw, chincherinchee, king proteas, delphiniums, lilacs, boronia, Geraldton wax, Oriental lilies, David Austin roses, alstroemeria, irises, pincushions, gerberas and striking gladioli. Don’t forget the superb green foliage options.
The arrival of Christmas bush adds a distinctly Australian touch to wreaths, centrepieces and festive arrangements. With Christmas fast approaching, place your floral orders early.
