FRUITS

Fruit

New season, low chill, yellow and white-fleshed peaches and nectarines from the NSW North Coast, Hawkesbury, South Australia and Victoria. Depending on size, variety and flesh colour, they sell for $5-$15 a kilo. Some varieties of nectarine develop an attractive speckle on the skin, indicating that the fruit is high in sugar and will be sweet to eat. Avoid fruit that is overly green around the stem.

Indulge in fresh strawberries' exquisite quality and great value. Bursting with sweetness and vibrant colour, they are $2- $5 a punnet, making them a delightful and budget-friendly treat.

Naturally sweet apricots with velvety skin and succulent orange flesh are a popular choice at $7-$15 a kilo. Apricots are so versatile. Poach, pan-fry, use in an upside-down cake, crumble or cobbler, toss through fruit salad, barbecue or eat fresh.

It is an ideal time to enjoy spring raspberries, full flavoured, low kilojoule, and so versatile; raspberries are delicious in fruit salads, desserts, and smoothies. Raspberries with ricotta & passionfruit mascarpone. Raspberries are $2-$6 a punnet.

Succulent tropically grown mangoes are incredibly delicious. Consider buying a tray and sharing them with family and friends. Mangoes are a top buy at $2-$5 each depending on size and even more economical by the tray. Select from Kensington Pride, Calypso and R2E2 varieties. The fabulous run-on blueberries continue, with punnets still available for $2-$5 each, depending on size. Blueberries are an excellent source of vitamin A and vitamin C. Sprinkle them in salads, both sweet and savoury, for a burst of sweetness.

Harvesting of glossy, vibrant red and rich black cherry varieties is underway in some growing areas. As the weather warms, the fruit will continue to improve in size and intensify in flavour.

Cherry and grape tomatoes are plentiful and a thrifty purchase at $3-$4 a punnet. Truss tomatoes are $4-$6 a kilo. Fleshy, oval-shaped Roma tomatoes and everyday salad tomatoes are $4-$7 a kilo.

VEGETABLES

Vegetables

Grab one or two bunches of English spinach, known for its lush green leaves and delicate flavour. Quickly transform it into a delectable meal by lightly sautéing it with garlic and olive oil. Enjoy this English spinach for just $1.50-$2.50 per bunch.

Elevate your salads and stir-fries with locally grown, vibrant snowpeas at $10-$15 per kilogram. These crisp, sweet gems bring colour and crunch to your dishes, adding delicious flair to every bite.

Fresh asparagus is a standout for value, taste, and versatility. Its delicate, nutty flavour shines, whether raw or cooked, hot or cold. This vibrant veggie pairs beautifully with veal, pasta, seafood, prosciutto, chicken, and steak. At just $1.50-$2 per bunch, it's a top-quality addition that's hard to pass up!

Eggplants are priced between $4 and $8 per kilogram, with varying costs depending on whether they're field or glasshouse-grown. Fresh, young eggplants usually don't require salting—unless you plan to deep-fry them!

Nutritious and versatile, broccoli is a great buy at $3-$5 per kilo. Store broccoli in the fridge to keep it fresh, as it can spoil quickly at room temperature. It's also packed with vitamins A, C, E, and folate, making it a fantastic choice for a healthy diet. These broccoli & sweetcorn buttermilk hot cakes are delicious and a great way to 'hide' green veggies; these delicious hotcakes can be served hot for breakfast or brunch or chilled in the school lunch box. Freeze any leftover hotcakes between sheets of baking paper in an airtight plastic container.

Versatile mushrooms are a must-have on the shopping list. They sell for around $10-$14 a kilo.

Sauté button mushrooms in a pan with butter, garlic, and fresh thyme or rosemary. Cook until golden and tender, then finish with a sprinkle of parsley and a squeeze of lemon for a quick and flavourful side.

Lebanese cucumbers are a top buy at $3-$5 a kilo, and Telegraph cucumbers are $1.50-$2.50 each.

Asian leafy greens are quick to cook, versatile, and super nutritious. For only $2.50- $3 a bunch, add them to your favourite stir-fry.

Seasonal favourite Continental beans, also known as Italian flat beans, are a fabulous buy at $7-$12 a kilo. They have a delightful crunchy texture and a delicious flavour. Add whole blanched beans to salads or slice and toss into a stir-fry.

FLOWERS

FlowersVictorian-grown fresh peonies are blooming. Waratahs, king proteas, larkspur, chincherinchee, David Austin roses, poppy pods, and hydrangeas are all looking stunning. Also in season: delphinium, beehive ginger, smoke bush, artichoke flowers, oriental lilies, Canterbury bells, kangaroo paw, billy buttons, flannel flowers, alstroemeria, iris, pincushions, gerberas, and gladioli.
