FRUITS
Juicy and sweet cherries are a must-have this week. Look for firm, glossy fruit with vibrant green stems. Store them in the fridge and wash them just before eating. Enjoy cherries as a snack, in desserts, or added to salads for a burst of flavour and colour. Cherry variety, size, and quality are varied, so prices range from $8-$50 a kg.
Sweet and tangy apricots are in season and full of flavour. Choose fruit with a golden-orange hue and a slight softness when gently pressed. These are a versatile addition to your kitchen this week, ideal for snacking, baking, or making jams and compotes. Apricots are $4-$20 a kg.
Victorian strawberries are bursting with sweetness and flavour. Select bright red, fragrant berries with fresh green caps. Store in the fridge and rinse before eating. Perfect for smoothies, desserts, or simply as a snack, they’re unbeatable value this week. Victorian Strawberries are $2-$5 a punnet and up to $12 for ex-large strawberries on a plate.
Plump and juicy blueberries are a top pick this week. Choose firm, evenly coloured berries and store them in the fridge for up to a week. Enjoy them in breakfast bowls, baked goods, or as a fresh and healthy snack. Blueberries are $2-$4 a punnet.
Sweet and refreshing rockmelon is in peak season. Select fruit that feels heavy for its size and has a lovely aroma at the stem. Store uncut at room temperature and refrigerate once sliced. Perfect for antipasto, fruit platters, salads, or blended into a cooling summer drink. Rockmelons are $3-$6 each.
Naturally sweet and bursting with goodness, papaya is a delicious choice this week. Select firm fruit to ripen at home until the skin turns golden yellow and yields to gentle pressure around the stem. Once cut, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to two days. Enjoy papaya fresh in fruit salads or blended into smoothies for a tropical treat! Papayas are $3-$7 a kg.
Peaches and nectarines are in excellent supply this week. They are flavoursome, aromatic, and ultra-juicy. Choose from white or yellow-fleshed fruit, with many now slip-stone varieties—perfect for effortless slicing. These summer favourites are ideal for desserts like poached spiced summer fruits or simply enjoyed fresh. Peaches and nectarines are $4-$12 a kg at your local greengrocer.
Add quality Truss tomatoes to your shopping list this week. Store them at room temperature for maximum flavour until they ripen to a rich red colour. These versatile tomatoes are perfect for salads, sauces, roasting, or simply sliced and drizzled with olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. Truss Tomatoes are $4-$6 a kg.
Exotic and fragrant lychee season has started. Choose fruit with bright, unbroken skin and a sweet aroma. Store them in the fridge to keep them fresh, and peel them just before eating. They are perfect for fruit salads, cocktails, or enjoying straight from the shell. Lychees are $30-$60/kg.
VEGETABLES
Carrots are versatile and affordable. Grate them into coleslaw, juice them with orange and ginger for a refreshing drink, or roast carrot batons with fresh thyme and olive oil for a delicious side dish. Stock up on this kitchen staple! Carrots are $1.50-$3 a kg.
An Aussie favourite, Iceberg lettuce is treasured for its crunchy layers, long-keeping qualities, and versatility. Use it to fill lettuce cups, shred it for tacos, cut into wedges, or tear leaves for a quick salad. Dress up your lettuce with a homemade dressing—try vinaigrettes, creamy ranch, or tangy sesame for a super salad upgrade! Iceberg lettuce is $2-$3 each.
Fresh celery costs only $3- $4 a bunch, and it adds crunch to your summer salads. Fabulous in everything from snacks to sides, celery pairs beautifully in a rocket, celery, and chicken salad with lemon mayonnaise for a quick and delicious meal.
Depending on the variety, bunches of radishes are available for $2.50-$4. For a crunchy, peppery bite, choose firm, rosy-red radishes free from cracks and with fresh-looking leaves. Trim the leaves and scrub the radishes gently before using. Place them in iced water for 30 minutes just before serving to enhance their crispness. Top ideas for using red radishes:
- Serve halved radishes with a spread of salted butter.
- Combine thinly sliced radishes with Lebanese cucumber, prawns, and baby greens in a salad.
- Add coarsely grated radish to coleslaw.
- Make a quick radish pickle to serve with a salmon salad.
Tender, juicy, and flavoursome Lebanese cucumbers are good value at $3-$5 a kg. Their smooth, crisp texture makes them perfect for fresh dishes. Slice them into salads, use them as a refreshing topping for tacos, or serve them with a dip like hummus or tzatziki for a light and healthy snack.
Green cabbage, at $5-$7 a head, is a refreshing and versatile vegetable for summer meals. Try thinly slicing it for a tangy coleslaw with a light vinaigrette, or use it in a crisp salad with fresh herbs and a citrus dressing. For a quick, healthy snack, roll up cabbage leaves with your favourite fillings for a fresh wrap or make a Japanese pancake called okonomiyaki. You can also grill cabbage wedges with a drizzle of olive oil and lemon juice for a smoky flavour, perfect for BBQs. Store in the fridge for up to a week.
Eggplants are versatile vegetables with a creamy texture that works in a variety of dishes. Grill slices for a smoky flavour, roast cubes for salads, or stuff whole eggplants with your favourite fillings. They’re perfect for hearty dishes like moussaka, eggplant parmigiana, or ratatouille and can also be blended into dips like baba ghanoush. Select firm, glossy eggplants with smooth skin for the best results. Glasshouse-grown eggplants are $3-$5 a kg.
