FRUITS
Rhubarb is a popular choice at this time of year as it teams so deliciously with in season apples, pears and strawberries, think crumbles, pies and puddings. Roasting rhubarb is also easy to do and a delicious way to enjoy it. You can pick up a bunch this week for $4-$5.
Succulent, juicy pears are in abundance and perfect for the cooler months. Poach or bake them for dessert, or slice semi-ripe pears and toss with wild rocket, toasted pecan and shaved pecorino for a fresh salad. Versatile and top value Packham pears are great value at $3-$5 a kilo.
Luscious tropical papaya is in plentiful. Start your day with a large wedge of these vitamin A and C rich fruits, enhanced with a drizzle of lime juice. Papayas are $3-$6 a kilo, depending on variety and size.
Plump and naturally sweet, fresh Medjool dates have a soft, caramel-like flavour. Enjoy them as a snack, or remove the seeds and chop into cakes, puddings or warm porridge. Look for shiny, dark brown dates. They're retailing for $16-$30 a kilo, depending on size and grade. Try them in homemade sticky date muesli bars!
Golden-skinned quinces are in season and full of old-world charm. Their musky fragrance and magical colour transformation-from pale to blush pink or deep claret-make them a delight when slow-cooked. Pick up quinces this week for just $5-$6 a kilo.
Easy to peel and delightfully sweet, Imperial mandarins are a fuss-free snack, ideal for lunchboxes or juicing. They're also delicious in salads or desserts. Choose firm fruit with glossy skins. Mandarins are in season at $2-$4 a kilo.
With their creamy texture and rich flavour, Hass avocados are perfect for smashing on toast, blending into smoothies, or adding to salads and wraps. Ripen at room temperature until just soft to the touch. Hass avocados are retailing for $1-$4 each, depending on size.
Packed with vitamin C, kiwifruit is a tangy-sweet addition to breakfast bowls, desserts or simply spooned straight from the skin. Choose slightly firm fruit that yields gently to pressure. Green ($7-$12 a kilo) and gold ($10-$15 a kilo) varieties. Or look for smaller fruit in punnets at your local greengrocers.
VEGETABLES
Victorian-grown fennel is at its peak right now. Its bold aniseed flavour mellows when cooked-perfect for sautéing, baking, or adding to casseroles. Try it in risotto or with mild cheeses, or give this braised fennel, lemon & thyme chicken a go. Fennel is great value at $1.50-$2.50 a bulb, depending on size.
It's the perfect time to enjoy fragrant, fresh herbs. Sage pairs beautifully with pork, duck, cheese, fish, pumpkin, and mushrooms, while thyme is a go-to for roast veg, chicken, casseroles, soups, and even sausages. Add a bunch to your basket for $2.50-$3 and give your cooking a flavour boost.
Brussels sprouts are a powerhouse veg packed with vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidants-great for supporting immunity and gut health. Their naturally earthy, slightly nutty flavour pairs beautifully with salty, smoky, or sweet ingredients. Think crispy bacon, garlic, parmesan, balsamic glaze, or maple syrup. Try roasting them until golden, then toss with toasted almonds or pancetta for a simple yet flavourful side. They're a delicious way to add nutrition and crunch to your autumn meals. You can pick up Brussels sprouts for $4-$8 a kilo.
As the weather turns cooler the demand for lettuce drops off and that means that the prices are very reasonable. Crunchy iceberg lettuce is great value at $2.50-$3 a head. Tear leaves into a salad, shred and toss in a hot pan with a knob of butter and a handful of fresh peas and mint leaves to serve as a side dish.
Mushrooms are a quick and tasty addition to almost any meal. Use firm button mushrooms in pastas and salads or grill jumbo flats for a meaty flavour hit. Store them in a paper bag in the fridge to keep them fresh. Regular mushrooms are $12-$15 a kilo, and exotic varieties are $4-$6 a punnet. Try them in this delicious mixed mushroom & crispy sage gnocchi.
Short on time? Stir-fries are your best friend. Toss Asian leafy greens like bok choy and choy sum with marinated chicken or pork for a fast, nourishing dinner. Asian greens are great value at $1.50-$2.50 a bunch. For a warming twist, try this choy sum, pork meatball & noodle soup.
Rich, earthy, and slightly sweet, chestnuts are a cold-weather favourite. Roast them for a warming snack, or add to stuffings, soups, or wintery vegetable bakes. Simply score before roasting to prevent them bursting. Fresh chestnuts are in store now at $6-$16 a kilo.
Add colour and nutrition to soups, pasta, and stir-fries with leafy kale. It's rich in vitamins and minerals and holds up beautifully to braising or sautéing. Try kale chips for a healthy snack. Kale bunches are available for $1.50-$3 each.
Don't be put off by celeriac's knobbly appearance look-celeriac has a delicate celery-like flavour and creamy texture when cooked. Peel and roast, mash, puree for a soup, or grate raw into salads and slaws. A wonderful winter veg at $4-$6 a bulb.
Whole Jap pumpkins are great value at$1.50-$3 a kilo, depending if they are cut or whole. Roasting enhances the pumpkin's natural sweetness, while the parmesan and seed topping adds irresistible crunch and flavour. This Jap pumpkin with parmesan & seed crumble is a wholesome, earthy side dish that pairs beautifully with roasted meats or hearty grain salads-ideal for autumn entertaining or weeknight dinners.
Carrots are a staple that tick all the boxes-affordable, versatile, and full of goodness. Enjoy them raw in salads, roasted with garlic, orange zest and thyme, or mashed with butter like potatoes. For a quick side, microwave sliced carrots with a splash of orange juice and a drizzle of maple syrup. Small pre-packed carrots are $2-$2.50 a kilo, while larger loose carrots are $2.50-$3 a kilo.

A few autumn favourites to look for this week include stock, celosia, tulip, Queen Anne lace, calla lilies, chrysanthemums, tulips, sea holly, celosia, snapdragons, freesia, erica, sunflower, heliconia, alstroemeria, hyacinths, lavender, gum nuts, birds of paradise, spray rose, kale, water lilies and oriental lilies.
