Fruit

Sweet, juicy mangoes continue to delight shoppers as the Queensland fruit come to market. Look for fruit that feels heavy for its size and has a fragrant aroma near the stem, depending on variety and size mangoes are ranging from -$2.50-$5 each.

Early season apricots, peaches and nectarines are full of flavour and perfect for snacking, adding to yoghurt, or grill for a simple summer dessert. Apricots are $6-$20 a kilo and peaches and nectarines are $5-$15 depending on size and variety. Plate up this spiced apricot, rocket & feta salad at your next barbecue.

Good supplies of bananas make them a wallet-friendly choice and a great snack for both kids and adults. Ripe bananas can be stored in the fridge to extend shelf life—skins may darken, but the flesh remains firm and fresh. A bunch of bananas to your shopping list this week - $3.50-$5 a kilo.

Glossy, sweet and tangy cherries from NSW, South Australian or and Victoria orchards are now available at your local greengrocer. Prices are ranging from $20-$50 a kilo, depending on size, quality and variety. Save this cherry tiramisu trifle recipe for a festival Christmas dessert.

Watermelons are a fantastic pick again this week at $1-$3 a kilo whole. Serve chilled in fruit salads, blend into smoothies or pair with prosciutto for a refreshing appetiser.

Creamy, vitamin E–rich Hass avocados continue to offer excellent value at $1.20–$3 each. Mash onto toast, dice into salads or blitz into dressings and dips.

Grape tomatoes are a thrifty buy with 200g punnets available for $2-$3. Roast grape tomatoes with olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper at 180°C for 20–25 minutes until caramelised. Serve with grilled meats, toss into salads or spoon over bruschetta.

Plump, colourful berries—including strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are eating beautifully. For best flavour, allow berries to come to room temperature before serving and wash just prior to eating. For me the pick of the week berry is blueberries at $3-$6 a punnet.

New season Australian grapes have just kicked off their season and are great for snacking or entertaining. Store unwashed in the refrigerator to maintain crunch.

The first plums of the season have arrived, selling for $15–$30 a kilo. Black Diamond plums are red-fleshed and extra flavoursome. Look for slightly soft fruit for maximum sweetness.

VEGETABLES

Versatile and nutritious eggplant is excellent value. Grill, roast, stir-fry or bake—it absorbs flavours beautifully and works well in pastas, curries, dips like baba ganoush or whip up a tasty eggplant, tomato and pinenut salad. Eggplants are available for $5-$7 a kilo.

Crisp and fresh Iceberg lettuce varieties are well supplied and ideal for light, summer salads, burgers or lettuce cups. Iceberg are $3-$4 each.

Although asparagus is past its seasonal peak, quality remains consistent. Look for firm spears and tightly closed tips. Enjoy steamed, charred or tossed through risotto. Asparagus $2–$3 a bunch.

Quick-cooking, nutrient-rich Asian leafy greens like bok choy, choy sum and gai lan are great value at $1.50–$2.50 a bunch. Stir-fry with garlic and oyster sauce or add to noodle bowls.

Fresh, firm red and green cabbages are great buying at $5–$6 a head. Slice finely and cook briefly for best texture. Try this idea: make a crunchy coleslaw combining shredded cabbage with grated apple and carrot, then serve with Peri Peri chicken burgers.

Tender, mild-flavoured leeks are a top pick right now. Use them in quiches, soups, risottos or as a base for savoury tarts. Store wrapped in a paper towel in the crisper for maximum freshness. Leeks are $2.50-$3 each.

Lebanese cucumbers are crunchy and refreshing pick up a kilo of $4-$5 this week, prices have eased a little.

Spring continues to deliver breathtaking floral variety. This week’s standouts include roses, hydrangeas, peonies in rich and pastel tones, foxgloves, lisianthus, dahlias, smoke bush, kangaroo paw, chincherinchee, king proteas, delphiniums, lilacs, fragrant boronia, Geraldton wax, oriental lilies, Canterbury bells, David Austin roses, Christmas bush, alstroemeria, irises, pincushions, gerberas and gladioli.
