FRUIT
Naturally high in fibre and vitamin C, fresh Williams pears are a delicious way to support healthy digestion and immunity. Choose firm, mature fruit as pears continue to ripen after harvest, then allow them to soften at room temperature for the best flavour and juiciness. If you’re poaching or roasting, select firmer pears so they hold their shape and deliver that perfect, tender texture. Priced between $3-$6 per kilo.
Tangy, vibrant plums are at peak supply right now, with both golden-fleshed and ruby-red varieties bursting with flavour. Expect to pay $4–$10 per kilo for varieties such as Amber Jewel, Cherry, October Sun, Tegan Blue, Sugarplums and Angelo, while the antioxidant-rich Queen Garnet are a premium choice at $10–$15 per kilo.
With an abundance of white, red, and black grape varieties in season, now is the perfect time to enjoy them, with prices ranging from $4-$20 per kilo. Roasting grapes intensifies their natural sweetness, creating a syrupy, irresistibly delicious treat—perfect for topping tarts, cheesecakes, or even a scoop of ice cream. They also add a delightful burst of sweetness to bitter-leaf salads, balancing the flavours beautifully.
Reed and last season Hass avocados are still a thrifty option Hass ‘Avo’s’ will be $2-$3c each and fleshy reeds are $3-$3.50 each.
Fresh figs are a luscious treat. In fact, figs are 55% natural sugar, the highest sugar content of any common fruit. Figs also share a trait with pineapple and papaya leaves: they contain an enzyme that digest proteins and can therefore be used to tenderize meats. You can enjoy figs for around 50¢-$3 each, depending on size
Apple harvesting is underway across the country. New season varieties fresh off the orchards include Royal Gala, Red Delicious, Mi, Fuji and Granny Smith. Storing apples in the crisper section of the refrigerator maintains their crunchy texture. Depending on variety apples are selling for $4-$10 a kilo.
Savour the sweet, succulent flavour of in-season Piel de Sapo melons by serving them chilled in a vibrant salad with a splash of lime and a sprinkle of fresh mint or team with serrano ham and burrata. Melons from Hay in NSW are available for $4-$6 each.
Refreshing, crimson fleshed seedless watermelon is a smart buy this week at $1.50-$2 a kilo when purchased whole. Once cut into wedges or halves, watermelon will retail at $2.50-$3 a kilo.
Berry fruit from Tasmania are excellent quality and good eating. Select from blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. Also, check out the juicy, green kiwiberries.

VEGETABLES
Buy NSW and Victorian grown sweetcorn for 80¢-$1.50 per cob and chargrill, boil or microwave. Asian leafy greens like bok choy, choy sum, gai lum and on choy/ Kang Kong (water spinach) are terrific value at $2-$2.50 a bunch. Make a stir-fry healthier and boost the texture and colour.
Beetroots sweet earthy flavour is delicious raw or cooked. Peel raw beetroot and thinly slice to enjoy in salads or wrap whole beets in foil and roast until tender, serve warm whole or dice. Add some colour to your diet with beets, pick up a bunch for $4-$5 a bunch or larger beets are sold by the kilo for $4-$5.
Enjoy potatoes this week as your local greengrocer offers thrifty savings. A 5-kilo bag of brushed, washed or red skinned potatoes are on offer for around $5-$8. Purchased loose off the shelf they are $2-$3 a kilo.
Choose eggplants that are firm, heavy for their size, with taut, glossy skin and a fresh green stem. Handle them with care, as they bruise easily, and store them in the fridge for up to a week. Available for $4–$7 per kilo, eggplants are incredibly versatile-grill them with olive oil and herbs, layer them into a rich moussaka, or roast and blend into a silky baba ghanoush (a roasted eggplant & garlic dip). Boost your immune system with nutrient-rich kumara (orange sweet potato), packed with vitamins and fibre, kumara is ideal for roasting, mashing or microwave chunks for a tastier potato salad. Kumara are $2-$4 a kilo.
Snap up late season okra. Slice into those tender pods and they turn beautifully silky in a curry or stir fry; they soak up spices like a flavour sponge. Char them on the grill with olive oil and sea salt and you get crisp edges, a soft centre. Okra is $8-$12 a kilo at your local greengrocer.
Field grown red capsicums are $3-$5 a kilo while the glasshouse capsicums are $5-$7 a kilo. Red capsicums add a healthy dose of vitamin C and A to your diet. FLOWERS

Late summer to early autumn brings a stunning variety of fresh flowers. Visit your local florist or greengrocer to pick up a vibrant bunch of lisianthus, hanging amaranth pineapple lilies, sedum, beehive ginger, sunflowers, kale, Siam tulips, roses, chrysanthemums, tulips, bachelor buttons, snowberries, asters, veronica, Queen Anne’s lace, or tiger lilies. Late-season hydrangeas are also still available, adding to the colourful selection. Top Tip: Replace the water in the vase every day to keep it clean and free from bacteria. This practice helps maintain the freshness of your flowers.
