FRUIT

FruitFlavoursome Williams' pears are a top buy at $2-$4 a kilo. Roasted pears are a superb accompaniment to roast pork and combine deliciously with parsnips. Remember that pears continue to ripen are harvesting so select firm, mature pears and ripen at room temperature. If poaching or roasting pears, use firm pears for the best result.

Don’t miss out on the last of the season’s excellent peaches and nectarines. Late season clingstones varieties are very tasty and top value at $4-$10 a kilo. Tip: to maximise shelf life store stonefruit away for new apples and pears.

Sweet persimmons season has started. Sweet persimmon also known as Fuji fruit look like are persimmon however unlike traditional persimmons, they can be eaten hard and crisp. Their attractive tangerine coloured flesh is a tasty addition to a salad or cheese board. Expect to pay $10-$12 a kilo, depending on size and quality.

Autumn heralds the arrival of new season custard apples. Sweet with a creamy texture, custard apples are delicious for breakfast served with vanilla yoghurt, passionfruit and toasted coconut. Custard apples are $10-$15 a kilo.

Enticing new season Royal gala (at $2.50-$6 a kilo) and Jonathon apples (at $5-$6 a kilo) are super crisp and tasty.

Shepard avocados are a pear-shaped variety with smooth green skin and a golden buttery flesh which does not turn brown when cut. With an average size 200g-320g, they are in season from February to May and tremendously good value at $2.50-$3 each, depending on size. Whip up an avocado dressing to serve with a rainbow salad.

Curvaceous autumn figs are plump, fleshy and naturally sweet and only 50¢-$3 each. Figs are delicious used in savoury meals like this fig, rocket, prosciutto & feta pizzas.

Naturally sweet, juicy and fun to eat, grapes are an autumn favourite. Add a bunch of grapes to kid’s lunch boxes, serve grapes with sweet and savoury salads or serve grapes with cheese. Depending on variety grapes are $4-$8 a kilo. Although the elongated Sapphire variety are around $12xa kilo.

Don’t miss out on flavoursome plums, bursting with colour and flavour. Autumn Giant, Radiance, Red Candy and Tegan Blue and are all in season. Plums are selling for $3-$10 a kilo, depending on variety. Team plums with berries or new season apples and whip up a tasty baked plum crumble. Queen Garnet plums are $6-$20 a kilo.

VEGETABLES

VegetablesSweet by name and sweet by nature – sweetcorn is a choice by at 80¢-$1 a cob.

Slender, fleshy and dark green in colour, a bunch of snake beans are tender, mild-flavoured and versatile. Snake beans are at their peak freshness and value early autumn and selling for $2.50-$3 a bunch. Create a tasty stir-fry like this Bok choy, snake bean & pork stir-fry.

Golden fleshed kumara tubers are excellent value at $2-$4 a kilo. Add diced and roasted kumara to a salad, they make delicious wedges or serve roasted kumara with eggs & avocado salsa.

The alluring aroma of fresh caramelising onions is guaranteed to please. Barbecues are not complete without onions served with snags or steak sandwiches. Grab a kilo of brown onions for $2-$3 a kilo and red onions $3-$4.

Asian leafy greens like bok choy, choy sum, gai lum and on choy/ Kan Kong (water spinach) are terrific value at $1.50-$2 a bunch. Make a stir-fry healthier and boost the texture and colour.

Carrots are very tasty at the moment and good value at $1.50-$2.50 for a kilo bag and up to $3 for larger carrots, sold loose. Microwave sliced carrots in a drizzle of honey and a little butter until tender. Whip up our super tasty, Moroccan inspired carrot, rocket and chickpea salad, this recipe is sure to become a favourite.

Turn the humble pumpkin into a star performer this week. Jap pumpkins are deliciously roasted and used in salads; they also add a golden colour and nutty sweetness to pasta dishes, a Massaman curry, risotto or a frittata. Jap pumpkins have bright orange flesh and sweet nutty flavour; expect to pay $1.50-$2 a kilo, whole.

Versatile and mild flavoured zucchinis are perfect for adding to a frittata, rissoles and vegetable patties or add tender slices to pasta dishes. Zucchini are $4-$6 a kilo, depending on size.

Leafy and nutritious kale is a popular choice for green juices, stir-frying or adding shredded to salads, frittatas and omelettes. Add a bunch to your shopping list it is only $2-$3 for a generous bunch. Try this kale with garlic, currants & pine nuts.

FlowersAutumn flowers are top quality visit your local florist and pick up a bunch of lisianthus, dahlia, flamingo celosia, oriental lilies, pineapple lily, Siam tulips, sedum, beehive ginger, sunflowers, local roses, tulips, chrysanthemums, hydrangea, hanging amaranth, dancing lady, smoke bush, tiger lily, Easter daisies, carnations, gerberas, bouvardia or tuberoses.
