Fresh berries make the ultimate summer dessert. Select from raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, loganberries, red currants and strawberries all are in season. One of the easiest and impressive desserts to make a head of entertaining is a Berry, Chocolate & Yoghurt Ice-Cream Cake. Berries are at their very best for value and quality in December. Berries are ranging from $3-$6 a punnet.
Your local greengrocer has the most highly fragrant peaches and nectarines. These stonefruits will delight your senses and your budget. Prices range from $3-$10 a kilo, depending on size, flesh colour and quality. Consider buying fruit by the tray as it is more economical and the fruit keeps better as it is handled less.
Celebrate the festive season with sweet eating cherries. Prices are expected ranging from $6-$60 a kilo depending size, variety and growing region. For maximum quality use within 2-3 day of purchasing. This Christmas treat the family to Roasted Cherries served with turkey or ham or round of a festive meal with chocolate dipped cherries.
Exotic and flavoursome; fresh lychees are a sweet summer sensation and now is the best time to make the most of lychees. To store lychees, place in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator. Lychees are $25-$35 a kilo, depending on variety.
Blushing apricots make a scrumptious and nutritious snack but have you tried char-grilling apricots and adding them to a salads? Serve apricots with turkey or chicken or make tangy relish with these gems. Apricots are $3-$12 a kilo, depending on size and variety.
Luscious, juicy mangoes are a summer favourite. There is plenty fruit available this week, expect to pay $2-$4 each or $10-$30 a tray. Celebrate with a Mango, passionfruit & raspberry cream trifle.
Serve large creamy fleshed Hass or Reed avocados in salads, with prawns or on toasted with Christmas ham. Avocado makes a meal more luxurious. This Avocado, baby spinach & prawn salad makes a fabulous light team or starter. Hass Avocados and Reed avocados are $1.50-$4 each, depending on variety, size and growing area.
New season grapes are firm and bursting with flavour. Grab a bunch or two for $6-$12 a kilo.
Plump flavour packed, new season figs are now in season for $2-$3 each, depending on size. Try this Fig, Honeyed Walnut & Blue Cheese Salad it’s delicious.
Medium to large sized rockmelons are great value at $3-$5 each. Try the new Queensland grown Candy melons at $3-$5 each (this melon has a golden smooth rind and a super sweet orange flesh.)
For a festive coloured roasted or salad, combine green zucchini (at $3-$6 a kilo) and red capsicum ($3-$10 a kilo) together with garlic cloves and red onions ($3-$5 a kilo).
Tasty Queensland grown premium handpicked beans $8-$12 a kilo. Toss cooked beans with a drizzle of olive oil, lemon rind and roasted garlic and serve hot.
Sweet potato wedges made with kumara are delicious, alternative sweet potato makes are delicious gratin or add to a cold to a potato salad. Kumara is $2-$5 a kilo.
Carrots are a bargain at $1.50-$3 for a one kilo. Roasted carrots are deliciously sweet, sprinkle with fresh thyme for added flavor.
Fresh herbs make add flavour to festive cooking. Sprinkle fresh thyme sprigs across roasted vegetables, add sage and parsley to your meat stuffing’s. Team lots of basil leaves, extra virgin olive oil, sliced heirloom tomatoes and black olives to serve as a side dish. Fresh herbs are $2-$4 a bunch.
Serve up fresh Victorian grown asparagus in stir-fries or salads. Fresh asparagus can also be eaten raw, it has a delicate nutty flavour – try this Shaved Asparagus, Rocket & Parmesan Salad. Green asparagus is $2-$3 a bunch.
Perfect to roasting or a potato salad desiree, pontiac, and brushed potatoes are $4-$6 a kilo. Gourmet potatoes such as kipfler and Dutch cream are $6-$7 a kilo.
Christmas week for flower growers means that red, white, gold and green foliage are in big demand, we highly recommend that you contact your florist early to place your order. There is a spectacular range of fresh flowers and foliage available this week including Christmas Bush, Christmas Bells, holly, spruce, potted poinsettias.
Also, in season sea holly (dyed gold & silver) berzelia, kangaroo paw, Queen Anne’s lace, chestnut foliage, classic roses and spray roses, buddleia, flowering gum, hydrangea, peonies, gardenia, lisianthus, celosia, gardenia, dahlia agapanthus, water lilies and lots of colourful gerberas.
