When it comes to cherries the old saying “you get what you pay for” rings true. Cherries supplies are picking up and the prices are slowly easing however good eating cherries will range from $14-$30 a kilo. Cheaper cherries are probably best suited to cooking a cherry jam or chutney this week.
When it comes to peaches and nectarines, the tip at this time of year is to make sure the fruit ripens to a slightly soft texture to ensure fruit develops its maximum flavour. White and yellow-fleshed peaches and nectarines are ranging in price from $6-$16 a kilo.
Melons thrive in warmer weather, this week checkout rockmelon $2-$5each, Honeydew and Piel de Sapo melons are $3-$5 each and seedless watermelon -$1.50-$3 a kilo. Melons are delicious served in sweet and savoury ways, try this piel de sapo melon with serrano ham & burrata as a starter or light meal.
Naturally sweet and irresistible Victorian strawberries are $2-$4 a punnet. Serve them dipped in melted chocolate or team with mangoes for a healthy treat. Blueberries $2.50- $4 a punnet, blackberries $3-$5 a punnet and raspberries $4-$6 a punnet. This peach & blueberry skillet pancake is a delicious way to enjoy berries and peaches. Substitute blueberries or any berries you favour.
November to January is the best time to enjoy Aussie grown apricots. Fresh, ripe apricots are juicy and taste both sweet and a bit tart. If unripe, place apricots in a paper bag at room temperature for one to two days. Fully ripe apricots should be used or eaten immediately. This week apricots are $4-$16 a kilo. Here is a delicious way to serve apricots; roasted apricots with passionfruit, honey & ricotta.
Enjoy sweet-eating Queensland pineapples in a fruit salad; add pineapple to your green juices, chunks of pineapple are delightful in a Thai style curry or a sweet and sour dish. Depending on size and variety pineapples are $3-$6 each.
Mouth-watering Northern Territory mangoes are impossible to resist. Mangoes make quick desserts and add sweetness to summery salads. Selling between $3-$5 each, depending on the variety and size. Choose from Kensington Pride, Calypso and the R2E2 mangoes.
The first of the season plums are now available. Expect to pay $7-$15 a kilo.
Cherry and grape tomatoes are plentiful and a thrifty purchase at $2-$3 a punnet. Truss tomatoes $3-$6 a kilo. Fleshy, oval shaped Roma tomatoes are $3-$6 a kilo.
Have you tried the world’s smallest tomatoes? They weigh about 1-2 grams. These miniature tomatoes –named Tomberries are the size of a small blueberry and are red or yellow coloured with a sweet tomato flavour add the whole to salads or pasta dishes for a burst of flavour. Tomberry are $2.50-$3 a 125g punnet.
Australian grown grapes are increasing in supply, and fruit is starting to sweeten up. Prices are ranging from $8-$14 a kilo depending on variety, with Menindee and Flame seedless now available.
Put crisp, healthy salads back on the menu extra crunchy Cos and Iceberg lettuce are a thrifty buy this week at $2.50-$3 a head. For a salad green with a delicious peppery flavour enjoy a bunch of watercress for $2.50-$3.
Sweet flavoured and low GI kumara is delicious roasting to serve hot with roast turkey or serve it cold in a salad. With pumpkin prices up this year, I recommend kumara, it adds colour and is good value at $2-$4 a kilo.
Pick up a large bunch of green onions this week for $2-$2.50 a bunch. Add green onions to salads, scrambled eggs, pasta dishes or sandwich fillings for a delicate onion flavour.
Crispy bean sprouts add crunch and flavour to all sorts of dishes. Choose firm white bean sprouts with small yellow tips. Rinse in cold water just before use. Toss bean sprouts through any stir-fries just before serving. Beans sporots are top value at $1.50-$2 a packet.
Glossy purple-black skinned eggplants have a tender texture and subtle flavour. Delicious sautéed, baked, grilled or barbecued, or pan-fried, eggplants absorb flavours so work well with flavours like tomato, garlic and basil. Premium glasshouse grown eggplant are firm and tasty, expect to pay $5-$6 a kilo for field-grown eggplant $3-$4 a kilo. This eggplant, tomato & pine nut salad is a favourite.
Cucumbers are ideal for salads, adding to rice paper rolls or making your own home-made tzatziki Lebanese cucumbers are refreshing, crunchy and are good value at $2-$3 a kilo.
For value, taste and versatility fresh asparagus is a winner, its delicate nutty flavour can be enjoyed raw or cooked, hot or cold and Aussie spears team deliciously with veal, pasta, seafood, prosciutto, chicken and steak. This premium quality vegetable is top of my list at $1.50-$2.50 a bunch.
Versatile bok choy is quick and easy to cook and a thrifty buy at $1-$2 a bunch. Select bunches with crisp pale-cream stems and fresh-looking green leaves.
A barbecue is not complete without mushrooms. Flats (large open mushrooms) have a rich, intense flavour and meaty texture. Superfood mushrooms are a must-have on the shopping list and are available at your local greengrocer for $8-$10 a kilo. Try barbecuing them with a dab of butter and crushed garlic.
Versatile zucchinis are a choice buy at $3-$6 a kilo. Try slicing them in half lengthwise, score, then brush with a little olive oil and place on the barbecue or grill plate, cook turning once until tender.
For only $2-$3 a bunch, the clean, fresh flavour of mint enlivens salads, sauces, dressings, boiled potatoes and couscous dish. This recipe for coriander, mint & chicken couscous salad is a quick mid-week meal and ideal for picnics and school lunches.
Antioxidant-rich kale is a tasty and thrifty buy at $1.50-$2 a bunch. This power-packed bowl is perfect for breakfast, brunch or a light weeknight dinner green veggie, avocado & egg bowls.
Springtime yields an abundance of fresh cut flowers, so beautiful time to fill vases with a stunning selection of vibrant flowers. This week we recommend peonies, hydrangea, iris, oriental lilies, hydrangeas, sunflowers, carnations, gerbera, heliconia, lisianthus, calla and tiger lilies, roses, bouvardia, buddleia or agapanthus.
