FRUIT

It’s a bumper time for freshly harvested apples. Perfect for a healthy snack and offering loads of potential for autumn desserts, apples depending on variety and size apples are $3-$8 a kilo. Try the new Jazz, Kanzi, Pink Lady and Golden Delicious varieties. All varieties have different taste, texture and appearance.

Attractive ruby-coloured pomegranates contain jewel-like seeds that are bursting with juice and flavour. Sprinkle the seeds over a range of dishes and use the juice for salad dressings or marinades. Pomegranate compliments lamb, duck and chicken dishes and spoonful livens up couscous, eggplant, a simple fruit salad and hummus. Pomegranates are $2-$5 each, depending on size.

Autumn is the peak season for Aussie grown grapes, they are plump with juice and bursting with sweetness. Seedless grapes are a popular choice with the Crimson and Thompson seedless grapes the perfect choice for school lunch boxes and healthy snacking. The Red Globes are also super tasty. Grapes are $4-$10 a kilo, depending on variety.

Put fragrant sweet and juicy rockmelons from Bundaberg and Bowen on your shopping list. Depending on size rockmelons are $3-$5 each. Remember to wash the fruit, before cutting.

Select glossy Imperial mandarins that feel heavy for its size as this indicates good juice content. In peak season from April to July, Imperial mandarins are virtually seedless and are very easy to peel. Mandarins are $2-$6 a kilo.

Full your fruit bowl with golden coloured lemons. This super versatile fruit is a kitchen staple, ideal for using in savoury dishes, marinates, dressings, sweet tangy desserts or baked goods. An average sized lemon will yield approximately 1/4 cup of juice and 1 tablespoon grated zest. Lemons are $3-$6 a kilo. Serve up a lemon delicious pudding or make a gremolata to serve with potatoes.

The flavour of a ripe, super soft persimmon has overtones of apricot and honey. Whilst the soft flesh can be turned in to ice-cream, a mouse or fool, the most popular way to savour this autumn favourite is to simply them cut in half and scoped out the flesh with a spoon. Persimmons are $2-$4 each or try the firm and crunchy Sweet Persimmon also known as Fuyu fruit at $4-$10 a kilo.

VEGETABLES

This ANZAC Day pick up a bunch of rosemary from your local greengrocer, wear a little sprig or cook up a memorable rosemary flavoured meal whilst sparing a thought for the many Aussies who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Broccoli is plentiful this week, the quality is superb and it’s only $3-$4 a kilo.

The dense thick stem and small cap of King Brown mushrooms are edible. These robust fleshy mushrooms have a rich flavour and retain their shape when cooked. Slice length ways or cut into rounds to cook. They are great pan fried, roasted or barbecued. Sold in punnets King Brown mushrooms are $4-$5 for 100g.

Similar to silverbeet, Swiss or rainbow chard has glossy, large deep green leaves and thick stems, however as their same suggests vibrant rainbow chard stems range in colour from shades of red, yellow, orange and pink. Enjoy both the leaves and the stems. Add finely chopped to salads, stir-fries, vegetable soups or sauté in olive oil until tender to as veggie side. Rainbow chard is $4-$5 a bunch.

Brussels sprouts are top notch, versatile and nutritious. Plunge 20 trimmed small Brussels sprouts into a pan of boiling water for 3 minutes. Drain, cool and quarter lengthways. Toss in a hot wok with a little peanut oil over high heat for 2 to 3 minutes until tender. Drizzle over 1 tbs soy sauce and a splash of sesame oil before serving. A kilo of Brussel sprouts is $3-$6 a kilo.

Nutritious Bok choy is quick and easy to prepare and cook. Steamed or stir-fried this versatile vegetable can be served whole or chopped. Bok choy is also a thrifty buy at $1.50-$2 a bunch. Looking for inspiration check out our 19 Bok choy recipes.

Crunchy fennel has a delicate aniseed flavour, it can delicious eaten raw and or roast, braise or add to soups. For a mid-week meal team fennel with tomatoes, Italian sausage and spaghetti. Fennel is $2-$2.50 a bulb.

Versatile, vibrant and top value, fresh carrots are $1.50 - $2.50 a kilo. Enjoy them cooked or raw. Top up your vitamin A with Carrot and sultana loaf, Sweet-glazed carrots with currants or Carrot, rocket & spiced chickpea salad.

Now is the time to pickle olives. There are beautiful large plump black olives available for $6-$7 a kilo and smaller sizes can be picked up for $3-$6 a kilo.

FLOWERS

The quality and range of autumn blooms is enchanting, this week you could fill your vase will dahlias, gerberas, stock, local roses, snap dragon, hyacinth, tulips, bird of paradise, celosia, gum nuts, freesia, veronica, sunflower, chrysanthemums, protea Easter daisy and or pink ice protea. Team with greenery like silver dollar gum, viburnum or glossy magnolia leaves.
