Fresh berries make the ultimate simple summer desserts. Select from raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, red currants and strawberries, all are in season. Your local greengrocer has the most highly fragrant peaches and nectarines. This fruit will delight your senses and your budget. Prices range from $4-$10 a kilo, depending on size, flesh colour and quality. Consider buying fruit by the tray as it is more economical and the fruit keeps better as it is handled less.

Celebrate the festive season with sweet eating cherries. Prices are expected to range from $10-$30 a kilo depending size, variety and growing region. For maximum quality use within 2-3 day of purchasing. This Christmas treat the family to a Cherry & Chocolate Pavlova it is a fabulous festive dessert.

Exotic and flavoursome, fresh lychees are a sweet summer sensation and now is the best time to make the most of lychees. Keep an eye out the new extra-large variety of lychee called Erdon Lee. They are super fleshy and extra juicy. Lychees are $10-$35 a kilo, depending on variety.

Blushing apricots make a scrumptious and nutritious snack, as apricots are rich in vitamin A and C. Serve apricots with turkey or chicken or make tangy relish with these gems. Apricots are $4-$15 a kilo, depending on size and variety.

Luscious, juicy mangoes are a summer favourite. There are plenty mangoes available this week, expect to pay $2-$4 each or $25-$40 a tray. Celebrate with a Mango, Passionfruit & Raspberry Cream Trifle or add mangoes to the Ultimate Fruit Platter.

New season grapes are firm and bursting with flavour. Grab a bunch or two for $8-$15 a kilo.

Passionfruit teams deliciously with summer stonefruits and berries. Choose passionfruit that feels heavy for its size. Slightly wrinkled skin indicates the passionfruit is ripe. When buying passionfruit choose plump fruit with smooth unwrinkled skin. Greengrocers often have special buys of a net bag. Passionfruit take this Summer Fruit Salad to the next level.

Don’t forget juicy limes this season to enjoy with seafood. Limes are $4 a kilo bag.

Summer and tomatoes are synonymous and as the weather warms up tomatoes flavour intensifies. Cherry tomatoes ate the best buy at $3 a punnet. A tasty tomato needs simple flavours. This Tomato & Fresh Mozzarella Salad with Basil & Garlic Crumb make a fabulous festive dish.


Asparagus prices have firmed up a bit as the Australian supplies are finishing up. Expect to pay $3.50-$4 a bunch.

Crisp and refresh cucumber are a bargain at $2-$4 a kilo.

Perfect for quick summer salads, meslun is a mix of young lettuce leaves, which could include, rocket, chicory, baby beet and baby spinach. Store, unwashed and loosely packed, in a plastic bag in the fridge. Use within 3 days.

Tasty Queensland grown machine harvested green beans are $4-$5 a kilo and the premium handpicked beans $8-$10 a kilo. Toss cooked beans with a drizzle of olive oil, lemon rind and roasted garlic and serve hot.

Sweet potato wedges made with kumara are delicious, alternative sweet potato makes are delicious gratin or add to a cold to a potato salad. Kumara is $2-$5 a kilo, depending on size.

Toss a few zucchinis on the barbecue, in a salad or into a roasting pan. This Italian Roasted Vegetables is colourful and perfect for serving this Christmas if you are having a classic roast. Zucchini are $4-$5 a kilo.
