Super juicy and easy to peel mandarins are an ideal snack; they are also perfect for adding a tangy citrus flavour to crisp winter salads. Combine mandarin segments with shredded fennel, rocket, sliced green onions and pomegranate seeds, then drizzle with olive oil and lemon dressing to serve; it's fresh, light and easy. Select from Imperial, Afourer, Nova, Daisy and Honey Murcott mandarins at $3-$6 a kilo, depending on size and variety.
Juicy Australian grown navel oranges are a bargain at $2-$5 a kilo. Buying in a 3-kilo bulk buy is a great way to save.
The 2021 tangelo harvest has started. Vibrant coloured tangelos are tangy yet sweet, easy to peel, and have very few seeds. Select plump fruit with a brilliant orange skin colour that feels heavy for their size. At $3-$6 a kilo, tangelos are a great snack, and they juice well too.
Winter is the peak supply for Australian lemons. Drizzle tomato-based casseroles and soups with a bit of lemon juice before serving to enhance flavour. Lemons are $3-$5 a kilo. Lemons
Once an ancient symbol of love and commitment, quinces are a popular ingredient in Middle Eastern cooking, where they feature in savoury and sweet dishes. Quinces are a favourite in Moroccan tagines, compotes, jams and pastes, snap up a few quinces before the season finishes, and try our slow cooker orange spiced quince. Quince are $4- $6 a kilo, depending on variety and size.
Smooth and creamy Hass avocados are the perfect accompaniment to homemade spicy potato wedges, or whip up a café style breakfast at home with this avocado, ricotta & tomato smash on toast. Avocados are top value at $1-$3 each.
Enjoy the rich, caramel flavour of fresh Medjool dates in steamed puddings like Medjool date and banana self-saucing puddings. Fresh dates are $12-$25 a kilo, depending on grade and country of origin.
Queensland strawberry season is underway; quality and prices are getting better every week, although the recent cold snap has slowed down ripening and supply this week. However, if, like us, you enjoy hot fruit desserts in winter, then team 500 grams of Queensland strawberries with Victorian rhubarb and bake this delicious rhubarb & strawberry meringue pudding. Strawberries are $4.99- $10.00 a punnet, depending on size.
Blueberry prices are dropping. Jumbo-sized blueberries from Far North Queensland are $7-$10 a punnet, and standard sized blueberries from Coffs Harbour are $4-$5 a punnet.
Prepare flavoursome swedes in similar ways to potatoes. This purple shouldered root vegetable has a delicate cabbage-like flavour and is a winter favourite that is perfect for adding to chunky vegetable soups and casseroles. It is also delightful boiled and mashed to serve with beef. Unearth swedes this week for $4-$5 a kilo.
Versatile and nutritious Brussels sprouts are $4-$6 a kilo. Try this quick idea; toss thinly sliced Brussels sprouts in a hot wok with a bit of oil and sliced bacon until just tender, add cooked noodles and soy sauce and serve. Alternatively, attractive and ultra-healthy Kalettes are sweeter and milder tasting; your local greengrocer will have 400g packets for $3-$5.
Quality Riverland grown Jarrahdale, Butternut and Jap pumpkins are a choice buy. The thriftiest way to purchase a pumpkin is to buy a whole at $1-$1.50 a kilo. Add 50 cents to this price range for cut pumpkins.
What celeriac lacks in appearance, it certainly makes up for in flavour and versatility. Celeriac has a delicate celery flavour and starchy texture, making it ideal for creating a heavenly mush or creamy celeriac, leek and bacon soup. Expect to pay $5-$7 each, depending on size. Size varies from 250g-750g.
Warm with a big bowl of Asian mushroom, kale and tofu miso ramen. This nourishing and flavoursome soup only needs 10 minutes of cooking time. Pick up a bunch of kale for $2-$3 a bunch and oyster mushrooms $3.50-$4 a punnet from your local greengrocer and get cooking.
Fragrance fresh herbs add subtle or intense flavour without the extra kilojoules. Use herbs singly or team them up to enrich your winter cooking. Favourite winter includes; thyme, parsley, oregano and sage; all are plentiful, top quality in winter and retailing at $2.50-$3 a bunch.
Humble cabbage is an underrated vegetable that is delicious raw or cooked. Add shredded cabbage to soul-warming chunky style vegetable soups or pan-fry cabbage with sliced chorizo sausage or bacon and apple slices. Cabbage is a thrifty buy at $2-$4 ahead, depending on size.
Whip up a hearty, creamy mash with Kipfler, Dutch Cream or brushed potatoes. Peel, chop and boil 1kg potatoes until tender, then mash with melted butter and warm milk until smooth. For something different, swirl through a little crumbled feta cheese and a few chopped black pitted olives. Kipfler and Dutch Cream potatoes are $4-$5 a kilo, and Brushed potatoes are $2-$4 a kilo; buy in bulk to save.
Fresh fennel is a thrifty buy. It works well finely shredded in salads to add a delicate aniseed flavour. Once cooked fennel, becomes sweeter and softer, making it a tasty addition to soups, casseroles or roasted vegetable platters. Fennel is retailing at $1.50-$2 a bulb.
At $1.50-$2.50 for a kilo bag of carrots, you would be crazy not to be cooking with nutritious and carrots. This creamy carrot and chickpea soup is super easy to make and so tasty.
Winter produces a stunning flash of seasonal flowers that lasts longer, provided they are stored away from direct heat and the water changed regularly. Now is the time to enjoy tulips, cow udders, peach sticks, ornamental kale, roses, lavender, hyacinth, Oriental lilies, jonquils, daffodils, Dutch iris, sweetpeas, stock, mini gerbera and poppies. The potted cymbidium orchards and cyclamen are also a good buy.
